Bhutan Flag: Meaning, Colors, History & Download

Bhutan flag

Bhutan’s flag (standardised 1969) is diagonally divided yellow–orange with a white dragon (Druk) along the divide. Yellow represents the Wangchuck monarchy; orange the Drukpa Kagyu Buddhist tradition; the white dragon purity, grasping jewels for prosperity and protection. The 2008 Constitution and flag rules prescribe a 2:3 ratio, artwork, respectful display, and retirement.

Bhutan’s national flag translates a millennium of Himalayan symbolism into a modern state emblem. A diagonal partition from lower hoist to upper fly separates yellow (secular authority of the Druk Gyalpo) from orange (Buddhist spiritual tradition). Centred on the divide is a white dragon, Druk, whose claws grasp jewels symbolising the nation’s wealth and the protection of its people.

Early twentieth‑century prototypes introduced the diagonal scheme and dragon; refinements under Queen Ashi Kesang Choden in the 1960s standardised proportions, colours, and the dragon’s rendering. The current form dates to 1969 and is entrenched by the 2008 Constitution and subsidiary rules that specify a 2:3 ratio, border and dragon geometry, and textile and printing guidance.

Protocol

requires respectful handling, correct orientation, raising on state and royal occasions, and dignified retirement. The flag is central to National Day ceremonies, dzong (fortress‑monastery) events, schools, and diplomatic posts.

By coupling royal colour with Buddhist orange and the guardian dragon, the flag communicates the dual foundation of Bhutanese statehood—monarchy and faith—within a striking geometry that is instantly recognisable among world flags.
